The purpose of this project is to initiate an important change with indoor lighting, that others can build on. The goal is to create floor lamps that can finally point up, providing all the ambient light needed in any room, that authentically matches natural light.

Quantity:

A milestone in lighting, the WindowLED is the first full-range ambient floor lamp that goes over 10,000 lumens. Using technology never put in a lamp, the level of lighting is orders of magnitude greater than anything before, and the comfort, control and quality are unprecedented. It dims with both a knob and bluetooth, from a dim floor lamp (1000 lumens), to brightening your room indirectly like it would with windows all around (10,000 lumens). It’s the first to exceed the halogen torchieres, the most popular floor lamp ever, retracted in the 90s. The product is fully open source, and community driven. The parts are available in kits to construct it from scratch or retrofit your lamp. Our purpose is to initiate a change in lighting, and hope to have it further developed through an open community forums.

Daylight to Nightlight

The brightest floor lamps today go from 1,000 - 3,000 lumens. Ours goes from 10 lumens, a nightlight, to 10,000 lumens, as bright as a room with windows on all its sides.

Ambient lighting

Shines up and out and away, as opposed to direct lighting, which shines down on you and in your eyes, and glares.

Full Range Dimming

Dims smoothly across a complete range, giving you total control over the light level.

Bluetooth and Knob

Dims with the lamp knob and your phone and other devices. Just download our app. We are adding custom presets, including automated dimming.

Warm color light

It is really common for LED floor lamps to have really harsh, white light (5000K). Our lamps have quality warm lighting (2700K).

A new kind of lighting

Lights around and behind things and across the edges of your room, in a way not experienced.

Halogen Replacement

Finally, a replacement for the most useful and popular floor lamp ever, the 300-Watt, 6000 lumen halogen torchiere, retracted in the 90s.

No Buzzing

So many lights buzz. Ours don't, they're totally quiet.

No Flickering

Many LEDs flicker, ours don't. Utilizes analog over digital dimming.

Replaceable Parts

The power supply, the LED and the knob are all replaceable.

Open Source

All parts and construction are listed, and available with a kit and detailed videos.

Community Driven

Improvements to the lamp will be made by any participant through open forums.

Finally, a Replacement for the Halogen Floor Lamp

If you were around in the nineties, you may remember the halogen torchiere. They were the most popular floor lamps ever, and were on their way to being in every home. They were the first and only floor lamps that had enough light to point up and not down, in peoples eyes, and went across a full range. Nothing has been like it since, not even close.

Many have wondered where they went, and many were frustrated there has been nothing like it since. In the mid-90s, the 300-watt, 6000 lumen halogen torchiere was pulled off the shelves because the bulbs got too hot, and replaced with halogen bulbs too dim. This lamp finally brings it back, nearly twice as bright and six times the efficiency, with the heat of a typical fluorescent bulb, and with all the additional features mentioned.

Dim as a lamp to Bright as Windows

You use many lights over the course of your day, but none of them light up in all the ways you need. With the WindowLED, you can do all the things you use room lights for, with a single light that does it better than all the lights you have.

For a typical living room, open windows might provide 10-25,000 lumens of light, and people still use lighting where the windows can’t reach. Their overhead lights might provide 3-8,000 lumens of direct light, and their lamps might provide 800-3000 lumens. With 1000-10,000 lumens of comfortable, indirect light, the WindowLED can provide all your room lighting levels with full control.

Full Range Dimming

Bluetooth

Our lamps have bluetooth, so you can download our easy app and dim it with your phone. It dims evenly and also has a 0-100 stepping system, and we are working on adding features, such as custom presets, such as your evening range or an automated brightening if you want your room lit without you having to adjust it yourself. Many floor lamps only have either a knob or bluetooth for dimming, whereas with ours you can dim with both.

Ambient lighting

The WindowLED has indirect light that is ambient and doesn’t glare, which no typical light sources do. Overhead lights are direct and shine at you and glare and floor lamps only diffuse light. Natural light through windows are ambient, but sometimes glare and need curtains during the day. The WindowLED would best be used to replace your overhead lights and complement your indoor lighting during the day, and be used instead of your other lamps in the evening and night.

Warm color light

It is really common for LED torchieres to have really harsh, white light (3500K). Brighter LED lamps must point up, as torchieres, but then they can’t put out much light, so they make the color more white to tweak it higher. Since it gives off so much more light, we made the color unusually warm (2700K), with a more orange glow, more like the color of sunrise or sunset, so it is comfortable at all times of day.

Really a New Kind of Lighting Altogether

When we first turned on the LED, we had never seen a room light up the way it did. Places were filled with light that didn’t before, and light wrapped all around, revealing the place in a way we’d never experienced. It’s hard to explain how something will change your life without them experiencing it themselves, and that is the case with lighting more than anything. The halogen floor lamps spread when people saw it in other peoples rooms. Likewise, you will impress yourself and the people who see it.

Technology Never Before in a Floor Lamp

The LEDs you use in your lamps are either bulbs or a disk of small LEDs. Our lamps use a single, powerful LED and power supply. The removable large power supply (5 x 5 x 12 inches and 2.7 lb) is meant to rest on the floor next to your outlet.

Replaceable parts

The LED and power supply and knob are all replaceable. The LED and knob can simply be re-screwed and the wires of all the components can simply be connected with a click. If the WindowLED will succeed in producing a new kind of floor lamp, hopefully this will set a precedent. The design is very simple with common standard connectors, so it is possible that any manufacturer can make their parts replaceable.

You may want to replace the LED with a different color or brightness. And even though the LED will last several years, it does dim over time, and if it gets damaged, you don’t have to replace the whole lamp.

The power supply is very large, and is meant to be latched when you unpackage it, and unlatched whenever the lamp is moved or repackaged. It uses a simple xlr connector, like what’s used with microphones. As time goes on, new power supplies may come out that can improve the lamp a lot further, with light range and responsiveness, and size.

Who are we?

The LED Classic Torchiere was created by Nitin Gadia, with the help of Steven Ourada, and others at Ames MakerSpace in Ames, Iowa. We all used the halogen floor lamps from the nineties, which are the most useful floor lamps ever. Perplexed about why there isn’t a lighting solution that comes close to the classic halogen torchieres, dabbling started back in 2013, playing with different lights and designs. Through a lot of trial and error, the project came together in 2016, when a first prototype was made. Now with your help, the lamp will be assembled in Ames, Iowa, in the heart of the USA.
